Bylsma Family Day 1: Sharks!

The Bylsma family, from Indiana, came to Marathon Florida Keys to celebrate Katie’s graduation from Ball State University and Todd’s birthday.

The crew included John Bylsma, his daughter Katie, his brother Todd and Grandad Tom.

They rented a house from Leslie at American Caribbean and scheduled five trips with SeaSquared Charters.  With some wind and iffy fishing conditions, we were able to get four trips in.

Day 1 was their Florida Keys shark fishing adventure, and I’m quite sure it was everything they expected and more.  We had between 12 and 20 sharks in the sandy areas close to the boat at all times.  At one point, my deckhand Jason Bell counted 57 bull and lemon sharks in the sand and surrounding grassy areas.

The sharks were so aggressive we could hear them eating the baits and we actually hand fed one a skipjack bait.

The crew hooked and landed 16 lemon sharks ranging from five to seven feet in length.  They could have been quaded up the whole time and landed many, many more, but they chose to land them one at a time.
