Captain’s Blog – March 20, 2010 – Marathon Florida Keys – It was a real treat for me to have Alec and Ruben Rosen on board for a shark’en adventure for Ruben’s 16th birthday!
We first headed to one of my go-to spots in the bay in search of lemon sharks. Unfortunately, we saw only permit and some sea turtles.
A quick change of course and we went Oceanside to the channel edge, where the action was red-hot with big sharks!
In 90 minutes we caught two nice blacktips in the 100- to 120-pound range. But the highlight of the day had to be the nurse sharks. I know, I know. Nurse sharks are typically considered a nuisance, but these were anything but. The two we fought had to be the biggest I’ve ever seen. One monster had to be at least 300 pounds and eight or nine feet long. Its head was wider than my shoulders!
Ruben was pretty quiet for most of the trip, but when he landed that big nurse, he said, “Holy cow” …. Or something to that effect!
