Marathon Florida Keys Weekly Fishing Report – Tarpon Time! May 25, 2011

You’ll be a winner this week with a wide range of good-eating and fun-fighting fish.

Snapper and grouper

On the reef, the snapper and grouper bite is a no-brainer.  Flag yellowtails, fat mangroves and massive black and red grouper are finding their way to dinner tables with regularity.

Tarpon – the silver king – is owning up to its reputation as a game fish famous for the spectacle of its acrobatics and its obstinate battle.

Anglers at all of the channels and bridges throughout the Middle and Lower Keys and Key West are experiencing the thrill of hooking, fighting and landing mighty tarpon ranging from 70 to 180 pounds and more.

Capt. Diego Cordova, of Flat Out Sportfishing in Marathon, reports the tarpon bite on fly was terrific at Bahia Honda during the Palolo worm hatch last week.  He says it was one of the biggest and best hatches he has ever witnessed, and he’s been fishing in the Keys since 1978.

We have a couple more weeks to take advantage of the awesome tarpon bite, so I highly recommend you hire a charter captain with the expertise to put you on what could possibly be the fight of your life.

Another fishery lighting up is dolphin.  They’re here and they’re thick.  Anglers are boating large catches of schoolie size fish with the occasional slammer added as a bonus.

If you really want to pull on some big fish that are not as crafty as the tarpon, get on board with a charter captain who will take you catch-and-release shark fishing

Lemon and blacktip sharks – even the occasional bull – are prowling the bayside shallow areas en masse and feeding aggressively.  On one of our trips on the SeaSquared last week, my deckhand, Jason Bell, counted 57 sharks swimming around the boat at once.

The week’s best catches

The SeaSquared spent the week fishing for shark, tarpon, snapper, grouper and porgy.

Honeymooners Joey and Jen caught tarpon, and we fished three groups in the Faro Blanco Invitational Tarpon Tournament.

Shark adventures were on tap for anglers from Wellesly MA, Cabo San Lucas Mexico and the Chicago area.

Tasty snapper and porgy came back to the dock with groups from Florida, the Jersey Shore, Colorado and Chicago.

We wish you a safe and fun Memorial Day weekend!  As summer vacation time approaches, let our FRIENDS help you plan your dream vacation in Marathon Florida Keys!
